United Nations Security Council
Topic Intro
Situation in South China Sea
Covering 3,500,000 square kilometers, encompassing an area from the Pacific Ocean to the Malacca Straits and Straits of Taiwan, the South China Sea has always been a region of conflicts and disputes for several factors. It is contested by all surrounding nations, including China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines and many others, with asserted sovereignty on the entire or part of the region. Besides all the countries’ claims on the ownership of the islands, the region possesses abundant natural resources such as oil and gas, which increases the dispute by their capability of bringing prosperity and wealth to the neighboring countries. In recent years, not only have the surrounding nations competing against each other through escalating military forces, countries distant recognizing the strategic importance of the region have also joined in the competition. Measures are taken and platforms are formed to deal with the problem but the effect is small. What measures do you think the Security Council can take to shape favorable regional dynamics without causing further conflicts? It’s all up to you!

Meet the Dais
Hello delegates!
My name is Claire Wu, and I’m now a sophomore majoring in Business Administration at NTU. I had my very first MUN conference when I was in high school, just like all of you, and I have fallen in love with it ever since. MUN is a place where I get to look at the world from different aspects, study various global issues, and to think deeply about all the things happening around us. I also get to improve the skills of debating, negotiating and academic writing during the conferences. To me, one of the best things about MUN is that I get to work with friends from different backgrounds and have fun together! I am really honored to be the chair for the Security Council this year, and it’s my pleasure to welcome all of you to the committee. I’m sure that you will enjoy HSMUN 2014 and find it a rewarding experience. Can’t wait to see you all! |
Salut! I am
Janelle Shr majoring in NTU Political Science of Political Theory as a
freshman. Before entering college, I only got one MUN experience in the second
grade of high school. Thus, almost every skill I hold now is learning in
college, so I considerate all of you should gaze this chance tightly because if
you learn with faith and passion, regardless it’s your first deputy or not, the
experience can always teach you something precious.
As a MUNer, I am proud of participating in this kind of academic activities. For me, every session is almost a brand new battle with new strategies, enemies and comrades. You might laugh when you saw this, but the truth is, everyone should find what MUN could bring to you and how can MUN change you. Anyway, hope all of us can have an incredible experience in HSMUN 2014. See you then!
Hello! I’m Violet Kuo(Kuo, Ting-An),
currently a freshman studying business administration at National Taiwan
University. I enjoy playing the piano, learning Spanish and traveling for
leisure times.
I began my MUN career during the second year in high school. This became a life-changing decision in my life. I met many aspiring youth from all over the nation and broadened my horizons with worldly view. I also developed a spirit of cooperation and learned to be open-minded. Most of all, through fruitful debate and exciting fast pace in the conference, I realized that with cultivation and determination, one’s potential is unlimited. It’s a great honor to serve as your assistant chair this year in HSMUN. This is my sixth MUN conference and my second time to serve in dais. I would like to share all the fabulous things I experienced. Hope all of you enjoy the MUN’s world! Hello guys! My name is Natasha Chou. I am studying political science- international relations in National Taiwan University, and after this summer I will be a sophomore! I only started attending MUN at university, but during the past two semesters I have learned so many valuable skills and also gained a brand new perception of international affairs. More importantly, MUN is the platform where I can apply the knowledge and academic theories I learn in class and transform them into resolutions that address real-life issues and problems! It is a great opportunity to participate MUN during your high school years, as you will be able to learn to negotiate and cooperate with different delegates representing different ideologies. I hope that all of you will come well prepared to the conference and enjoy the fun during your sessions! Welcome to HSMUN 2014!
Hey everyone! Welcome to Model United
Nations!
My name is Anne and I am currently a freshman in international business. So… First of all, my childhood consisted of me moving from Brussels to Paris to Taiwan to Brussels to Paris and then back to Taiwan. Then, I went to Canada with my family for five years, which is the longest I have ever stayed in one country! Needless to stay, I love adventure and am not too fond of the idea of prolonged comfort or stability. If you want some challenge in your life, MUN is definitely the right thing for you! It is not only rewarding, but we all know, MUNers always have the most fun! “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas Alva Edison Now that you got the opportunity, work hard and play hard! I look forward to meeting you all in July, cheers! |
